Young riders dominate the opening round World Cup qualifier
Tom McDermott and Romantic Dream at the Sydney Royal World Cup Qualifer
Young riders swept the stakes at the Sydney Royal Easter Show's Jumping World Cup Qualifier yesterday.
Top place honours went to 18 year old Tom McDermott who walked away with first and third place. A fast pace and near faultless performance handed second spot to Evie Buller.
Pairing with Romantic Dream McDermott jumped clear in both rounds and posted a very quick final time of 60.00 to take first place in the season opener.
His performance with CP Rolex secured third position in the class. The combination recorded a time of 65.81 in the second round and finished the Werner Deeg course with just one rail down.
“I’m very excited and proud to have achieved this result,” said McDermott. “I haven’t had the mare (Romantic Dream) for long so it’s a huge relief to get a win under our belt. I’ve got a great team of horses and I’m very happy with how they performed.”
“All of the top riders in Australia were there, including Evie Buller who is one of the most competitive riders in Australia at the moment, so I’m very happy to walk away with the win,” he added.
A clear first round by Evie Buller and Yalambi’s Landor had the combination in top position but with one rail down in the final round, the pair was relegated to second place.
The combination was also second fastest around the course in the final round, clocking a time of 65.13. Top ranked combinations from yesterday’s opening round are now in contention for a place at the Jumping Final which will form part of the 2012 Equestrian Grand Final.
This spectacular multi-discipline event will be held at EQUITANA Melbourne from 15-18th November 2012.The best placed 15 combinations on the 2012 FEI World Cup point score (Australian League) will be offered a place at the Equestrian Grand Final (based on results from all FEI World Cup qualifiers held in Australia from 01 January 2012 to 15 October 2012).
