Announcing this year's Hall of Fame inductees

Equestrian Australia is pleased to announce the recipients of this year's Hall of Fame honours.

Inductees will be celebrated at the annual Sport Achievement Awards Night on Tuesday 30 April at Le Montage in Sydney.

Congratulations to the following recipients:

2012 Hall of Fame - Service to Sport: Vicky Lawrie

Having won six Garryowen trophies, four Barastoc Horse of the Year titles and 15 national titles Vicky Lawrie is one of Australia's most accomplished show horse riders.

The South Australian started out in Pony Club and first competed in Eventing but since making the switch to Show Horse she's been just as active behind the scenes as she has been in the Ring.

2012 Hall of Fame inductee - Team: 1976 Eventing Team

The team which won bronze for Australia at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games will be inducted into Equestrian Australia's Hall of Fame.

With their bronze medal success the team of Bill Roycroft and Version, Wayne Roycroft and Laurenson, Mervyn Bennett andRegal Reign and Denis Piggot and Hillstead, was responsible for a fifth of Australia’s total medal haul at these Games.

2012 Hall of Fame inductee - Individual: Albert 'Bert' Jacobs

This year's Hall of Fame inductee in the individual category is Albert 'Bert' Jacobs, Australia's first representative in Show Jumping at an Olympic Games

In becomming the first individual to represent Australian in Show jumping at an Olympics, Jacobs was also a member of Australia's first Olympic equestrian team.

2012 Hall of Fame inductee - Horse: Sunburst

This year's Hall of Fame inductee in the Horse category is Sunburst, the event horse which won gold for Australia at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, with the same rider that he started with in Pony Club.

In equestrian it’s common for our Olympic riders to get their start in Pony Club, progress through the ranks and end up representing their country at the biggest sporting event in the world. But it’s not all that common to hear of a horse starting out in Pony Club, staying with the same rider and eventually going on win an Olympic medal.

Equestrian Australia is pleased to announce each of the 2012 Sport Achievement Awards Night Finalists.

As well as acknowledging the top performing athletes and horses of the previous year, Equestrian Australia’s Sport Achievement Awards also recognise the sport’s most outstanding administrator, coach, official, owner, volunteer and event of the past 12 months.

Winners of the 2012 Sport Achievement Awards will be announced at a gala ceremony on Tuesday 30 April at Le Montage in Sydney and ticket buyers are urged to get in early as seats are limited.

“The Sport Achievement Awards Night is an opportunity to highlight the most successful, dedicated and extraordinary members of Australian equestrian sport,” said Equestrian Australia CEO Grant Baldock.

“It is through these awards and the Equestrian Hall of Fame that the greater equestrian community is able to recognise the contribution made by our athletes and those who work so tirelessly behind the scenes to make our sport so enjoyable.
