Australian Eventers set for Jumping phase tomorrow

The Australian Eventers took to the forests of Versailles today for the cross-country phase of the eventing competition. The first combination out were Shane Rose and Virgil who had a great run and  safely finished the course adding only 2.8 penalties to their score. Shane and Virgil will go into tomorrow's Jumping phase on a very respectable 37.4 penalties and in 23rd spot.

The second Australian team member Kevin McNab elected to retire his horse Don Quidam on course in the horse's best interest. The horse has been assessed by the Australian team veterinarian, who advised that Don Quidam has sustained a soft tissue injury and is currently undergoing treatment. The horse is expected to make a full recovery. Reserve athlete Shenae Lowings will step into the team position to complete the Jumping phase tomorrow.

To wrap up the day for the Aussies, we saw a a fantastic clear run by Chris Burton and 'Shadow Man' who will now head into tomorrow's Jumping on their Dressage score of 22 penalties, sitting in the bronze medal position at this stage.

As a result of McNab's retirement, the team collected an additional 200 penalties which takes them well out of medal contention, but at the end of the day - it is the welfare of the horse that always needs to take priority. There are certainly some chances for individual medals though and we wish our athletes the very best for the competition ahead.
