Fiona Fehlberg – Show Horse Judge and dedicated EA Coach
The 2024 Hygain EA Australasian Show Horse and Rider Championships - The Nationals - have now been and gone. This competition is widely considered to be the “jewel in the crown” of Show Horse events as it brings together the best of the best in a spectacular that delights participants and spectators alike. All thanks to the event organisers, volunteers and judges, without these dedicated individuals, there is no show.
The 2024 event was hosted by Equestrian NSW and conducted over three days from 28 - 30 November 2024, at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre (SIEC). 230 horses and 195 riders came from all over Australia to compete for the most prestigious annual awards. Each entrant had to qualify at their state's Horse of the Year (HOTY) show during the previous 12 months and everyone agreed that the task of the judging panel was made difficult because the quality of entries was very high and the presentation outstanding.
The judging panels for all classes were announced in September 2024 and the ring was officiated by Fiona Fehlberg (TAS), Jacqueline Johnson (VIC), Angela Weiland-Hines (SA) and Michael Baker (NSW).

Equestrian Australia (EA) was keen to share some insights from the point of view of a judge at this event and asked Fiona to explain and how she felt about being invited to officiate.
Fiona began by saying. “Many show enthusiasts aim to qualify for The Nationals and plan their show entries throughout the year accordingly. The qualification criteria ensures that only the best performed exhibits come before the judges and the standard this year was excellent, it was a pleasure to be part of it.”
“I would like to thank EA for the opportunity to talk about the milestones that led to me being invited to judge in 2024.”
“From an early age, I developed a deep passion for horses and began my equestrian journey as a competitive rider. I honed skills in Jumping and Eventing throughout my teen years, then fully committed to showing horses and Dressage.”
“My dedication to equestrian sport has never wavered and this has made a significant impact on my career as a rider, judge and coach. I have judged Dressage events and show horse competitions throughout Australia and New Zealand and have had the honour of judging at the Australasian Show Horse and Rider Championships on two occasions, the first in 1996 and again in 2024.”
“The opportunity to officiate at the highest level is not only a privilege, it has been a rewarding experience that allowed me to appreciate the exceptional talent of horses and riders competing for the titles and also given me an opportunity to connect with fellow judges and organisers. Collaboration at this level allows officials to share information and learn from the cross pollination of ideas.”
“After years of judging, I have transitioned away from Dressage to focus on my passion for coaching and Show Horse judging. With the wealth of experience and commitment to excellence that I bring to my roles, I hope to inspire and guide riders who will also play a part in shaping the future of Australian equestrian sport.”
“I thank Equestrian Australia along with my friends and colleagues in the sport for the wonderful community and camaraderie that we all share. I wish everyone a great 2025 and happy, successful showing.”
