George Grover, 2016 Remi Stud Scholarship winner
The Remi Stud Young Rider Scholarship is an annual scholarship and is awarded to a very deserving Young Rider who has the talent and dedication in either Dressage or Eventing but needs financial assistance to purchase a horse of their dreams. Every year the dream comes true for one lucky young rider as the scholarship includes the ownership of a purpose bred weanling foal by one of the best performed Hanoverian stallions in Australia.
The 2016 winner was George Grover, an Eventing rider from Kingston, Tasmania. George has been a member of Huntingfield Pony Club, Tasmania since he was 8 years old. Over the past 10 years at Pony Club he has competed in Mounted Games, showjumping, dressage and eventing at a state level, and also played polo. George’s coach, Lydia Jackson, suggested he take a look at the Remi Stud Scholarship, which rewards a young rider with a substantial scholarship and a top class Hanoverian weanling. George is absolutely delighted with his weanling, Remi Lord of the Vale S. Pete (as he is known) is growing extremely well on the lush pastures in Tassie, and we look forward to hearing of their progress as he matures in the next couple of years.
“There was an incredibly open-ended application system, with other applicants submitting video applications, photos, audio recording etc. I decided for something a little more down to earth and wrote a reasonably brief submission along with a support document from my parents and coaches Lydia Jackson and Sonja Johnson. This was in total around 2,000 words and although time-consuming well worth the eventual results.” George said.
"I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to be given the beautiful Pete and to think I have had him for an entire year is a slightly scary proposition. In this time, Pete has become a much loved and valued part of our family. Pete has grown up a lot in his short time in Tasmania, and is probably close to sixteen hands already!
Pete’s sensitive and sensible nature has been demonstrated in the long walks and activities we have been undertaking over the last six months. Pete has learnt to be brushed, led and tied without any hesitations, despite developing a slight phobia to the alpacas owned by our neighbour!
I am very much looking forward to continuing to develop a strong relationship with Pete as he grows, and I eagerly look forward to the day I will finally be able to ride him.
I would finally just like to thank all the incredible sponsors who have supported this amazing initiative to support our young riders in Australia. And most importantly to Cheryl O’Brien for breeding such a beautiful horse. I look forward to representing all the sponsors in the years to come."
