Olympian Matt Ryan announces retirement
Triple Olympic gold medallist Matt Ryan has announced that he is retiring from eventing.
Ryan made the announcement via the social media site twitter:
“G’day everyone! It is with sadness I have made the decision to hang up my riding boots for good. Mainly due to niggling injuries.”
“Thanks to everyone who has supported me over the years. I am now going to concentrate on training, teaching and media work... Ideas welcome,” he said.
Ryan is one of the most successful event riders ever to represent Australia. Only the second Australian equestrian after Laurie Morgan to win gold in the individual and team’s three day event at the same Olympic Games, Ryan’s duel crowning moment came in 1992 at the Barcelona Olympic Games where he famously clinched victory in the individual event by just 1.2 penalties.
Ryan, now 49, went on to represent Australia at the Sydney 2000 Games where he also pocketed team gold.
The now UK resident was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1993.
