At the Olympic Games Team and Individual medals are contested over 3 rounds of competition in an arena 60m by 20m. Teams are made up of three athletes with all scores to count. Substitutions are possible in the team competition for medical or veterinary reasons.

The three rounds are:

  • Grand Prix

  • Grand Prix Special

  • Freestyle

The first round of competition is the Grand Prix where all athletes compete and perform the same test to gain qualification for the Team Final (Grand Prix Special) and the Individual Final (Freestyle).

Starters in the Grand Prix are broken up into 6 groups of 10 athletes. The groups are decided based on the World Rankings so the best athletes will be spread across the groups.

The Grand Prix scores decide qualification for the Team Final with the top 8 teams going through to the Grand Prix Special.

The Grand Prix Special is broken up into 3 groups of 8 athletes with 1 athlete per nation in each group. The winning team will be the one with the highest combined score from all 3 athletes.

The 18 best athletes from the Grand Prix will line up in the Freestyle to decide the individual Olympic medals. In the Freestyle the athletes choreograph their own routine to their own music. Certain movements have to be included within the routine with marks awarded for technical difficulty as well as artistic marks. The combination with the best score will climb the podium to be crowned Olympic champion.
