Badminton wrap up

The focus during the show jumping phase at Badminton today was on Chris Burton (Graf Liberty), Sam Griffiths (Paulank Brockagh) & Andrew Hoy (Rutherglen), after a challenging cross country yesterday where Shane Rose (Shangai Joe), Andrew Hoy (The Blue Frontier) and Paul Tapner (Bonza King of Roughes) were eliminated.

Burton completed a polished show jumping round with just one rail and a time penalty positioning him in 18th place, moving up one from the cross country phase. Burton received an unlucky 20 penalties yesterday dropping him back from first place after the dressage to 19th.

When asked how Burton thought the show jumping went, he commented: “A jumping three day event horse is always difficult. They're not quite the same horse that you’re normally jumping but he tried really hard, he was very honest, so I am happy with him.” Burton said.

Sam Griffiths again showed the world the quality of his talented mare ‘Brocks’ jumping clear and under time shifting from 40th after the cross country to 34th. Griffiths received 50 penalties yesterday after sitting 11th after dressage for a ruling whereby officials deemed his horse did not go through the flags on an obstacle resulting in a disappointing position on the scoreboard. The successful pair already have the 2014 Badminton title under their belt along with a bronze team medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Andrew Hoy and his second mount for the competition, Rutherglen, unfortunately had a difficult round with seven rails down and three time penalties positioning him in 41st place from 34th after the cross country and 16th after the dressage. Hoy later described on twitter:“Not quite the finish we had hoped for, Rutherglen unfortunately didn't feel like playing the game today. Ready to fight another day!”

The winner of the 2017 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials is Andrew Nicholson (NZ) and Nereo on 41.4. In third position after the dressage, Nicholson jumped clear with only one time penalty rising ahead of Ingrid Klimke (GER) in first place who had an unfortunate round with rails, time penalties and a refusal. Nicholson has completed Badminton a record breaking 37 times never to win, so it’s well deserved on his 17-year-old gelding.

Event Rider Masters

With the upcoming Event Rider Masters set to kick off next week, we hope to see our Australian riders back on track and confirmed to represent across the seven leg international CIC 3*** series.

Aiming to showcase the sport of Eventing through live streaming to global audiences, the ERM series features reinvented features like a two day shortened format, dressage to music and record prize money of £400,000 in 2017.
