Para-Riders Take the Stage for the First Time at Equitana (Part 3)
In part three of a 4-part series, we interview our next Para-Rider Zoe Vorenas, who will be featured at Equitana 2018, the first year Para-Equestrian has ever been featured at the event.
Zoe was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive autoimmune disease called Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) in March 2014, but 2 weeks later after another relapse, it was found that the ADEM had developed into an aggressive and fast progressing form of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Zoe is a Grade 4 Para-Rider, with some experience under her belt – she was on the long list for Rio 2016. Zoe has aims of competing in the Aachen Challenge and also the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
“Despite all the setbacks and challenges you will face, you will enjoy the journey nonetheless”
What got you into horses?
Zoe: I started riding when I was 3 years old. I’m the only horsey person in my family, so not sure where the passion came from!
How often do you ride?
Zoe: 5-6 days a week.
Tell me about your horse – name, age, breed, quirks and how you found each other?
Zoe: My main competition horse, Little Brave, or ‘Minty’ as he is affectionately known, is a 13-year-old Warmblood gelding. We have been a partnership for three years. Over these years, with the coaching and support of Wyronga Park, we have worked our way through from Prelim to Advanced. Our biggest competition highlights so far are 2017 Australian Reserve Champions, Top 3 Finalist Dressage Horse of the Year, and Top 3 Finalist Para Athlete of the Year.
What are your goals (short or long term)?
Zoe: We are currently working on stepping up to advanced consistently, hoping to go to PSG and eventually compete in the Aachen Challenge! We will also continue to compete in the Para-Equestrian Classes. Long term, I’m looking towards selection for Tokyo in 2020.
What advice would you give your younger self if you could go back in time?
Zoe: There are many things I’d like to tell my younger self! I think the biggest thing would be that, despite all the setbacks and challenges you will face, you will enjoy the journey nonetheless. The friends you make are friends for life, the strength you find within yourself will stay with you forever, and your resilience will see you through. Continue to be brave.
