Adelaide Local Heather Currie wins Dressage Grand Final opener
Adelaide Hills rider Heather Currie has won the opening round of the Equestrian Grand Final for Dressage in Adelaide, South Australia held in conjunction with the Australian International Three Day Event.
Riding Donnerblitz her imported warmblood stallion, Currie blitzed the field scoring a strong 67.149%. The pair was the last to go in the field of 12 and the best was saved for last with Currie performing an accurate and well ridden test to secure the win.
Based in the Adelaide Hills, Currie is familiar with the Australian International Three Day Event and is excited to have the chance to compete at a venue so close to home.
"I really enjoyed the atmoshpere, this is a fantastic show" said Currie.
"I love being here, it gives you a sense of excitement being amongst the other competitiors."
Currie is looking forward to performing her Freestyle on Friday.
"It's a fun Freestyle and it really suits my horse," she said
In the team's event the Young Rider trio of Morgan Duell (Florinzz), Cooper Oborn (Fairbanks Picasso) and Stuart Archibald (Roxbury Lucille) are emerging as strong contenders for the first ever Grand Final team's title after occuping second, third and fifth positions respectively.
It was a close fought battle between Duell and Oborn with Victorian based Duell edging out her teammate to take second place by the smallest of margins. Duell's score of 65.877% was just ahead of Oborn's result of 65.842% which placed him in third.
Riders now turn their attention to Friday's Intermediate I Freestyle which is the second and final round of the Equestrian Grand Final for Dressage. The combination and team with the highest cumulative point score from the two days of competition will be declared the winners.
