The Games' greatest spectacle

It’s about being part of one of the biggest ‘performances’ the world waits for.

For our Olympians, it’s about maybe their smile or wave being seen by a worldwide audience of three billion which includes their family and friends.

About an experience of a lifetime for an athlete before the opportunity of their life begins.

It’s the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony; the colour, choreography and clamour than comes about every four years … the pre-sport spectacular that rates with Super Bowl half-time and the football World Cup’s opening night big show.

And it’s about balance.

Australia’s marching contingent, 103 (and 44 officials) of just over 300 athletes already in Rio de Janiero, will rate in ratio with most countries when they step out into Maracana Stadium tonight Brazil time (AEST Saturday morning 9am).

Nineteen of the 28 sports will be represented by just under a quarter of the eventual Australian athletic residency in Rio over the next fortnight.
