Equestriad Day 1

More than 650 horses converged on Bicentennial Park, Camden, for today’s opening of Equestriad and the National Eventing Championships.

Some of the country’s leading riders Stuart Tinney, Tim Boland, Megan Jones and event organiser Shane Rose are competing at this year’s event along with up and coming stars Hazel Shannon and Shenae Lowings.

One of the highlights of the first day was the CIC3* cross-country course walk hosted by Rio Olympics Bronze medallist Stuart Tinney. It’s the first time ever at Equestriad that riders and the public have been provided with this rare opportunity to gain insight from the eventing legend.

This year a new water jump has been added to the course that Tinney described as a “tough track”.

“The line into the jump in the water is tricky and right up there with the big international courses,” Tinney said.

In mild and slightly overcast conditions CIC3* riders completed their dressage phases. Tim Boland on GV Billy Elliot is the current class leader (41.50) with Megan Jones and Kirby Park Impress in second placing (44.40) and Gemma Tinney on Annapurna third (46.70).

Oceania Championships long listed young rider Hazel Shannon finished in sixth position after day one (50.50) and Shenae Lowings is currently in 9th placing (51.90).

The final day of competition where Australia’s national eventing champions will be decided starts tomorrow at 8am.
